a quick question for car modelers

Ive started quite a few car and never finish them. I start running into problems. One thing Ive been curious about is the different parts of the car when to detach or just start with a new primative. I generally shift drag edges. Now should I get a rough shape before I detach, should I just start with a new plane. I like add shell and do renders as I go along but I find once I start adding too much detail it makes it hard when going to another part of the car. Any help or advice....Please and thank you

Rough shape most definately. I never start modelling from a new plane.
