350z First Car

I've been working on this model on and off. It looks pretty good so far the only problem is with the detailing, how do you do those lines in the body of the car? I try to do it by selecting and detaching the faces of the different parts of the car then selecting the edges, extruding them down, and then chamfering them. Whenever I do this I end up with sloppy edges that really bug me, am I doing this right? Is there a better way?

Detailing lines?

Mesh before I started detaching:

Edged faces off:

THe edges look really choppy and the corner of the hood looks strange.
