Military in your blood - USS Newark C-1

Hi all!

I decided to edit this first message to show you the latest rendering first (but there may be more new images at the bottom) and give you some basic informations about the ship.

The protected cruiser USS Newark C-1 was the first modern cruiser of the U.S. Fleet.
It was steampowered by two 8,500 IHP triple expansion engines.
But it also had full sails (maybe for longer trips because of small coal capacity or so).
It was commissioned 1891 and decommissioned 1913.

The ship is modelled only from old photographs and a painting. I have no plans available, so I can only hope that my reconstruction is mostly correct.
Did I say that I am not familiar with ships - it is my first warship and my second ship at all.
I modell it just because I saw an old painting of the ship and liked it immediately (and because I allready have built to much aircrafts) :)

To give you an idea of my resources I have added some original pictures at the border. This picture is June, 16th.

I used 3D Studio MAX 3.1 to model but final rendering is done in 3ds max 6.

Greetings!

Note: The thread has been renamed and the old first message contained the question:
"Maybe you can allready guess which ship it will be" ... so do not wonder about the first reply.

I think this is one medium size cruise of 1880's: I draw two very similar style warships in my work about Cavite battle (1898 war), the Reina Cristina (Spain) from 1886 and the USS Baltimore from 1885

USS Baltimore is realy close ... I build this ship from pictures of the protected cruiser USS Newark C-1.

I only have some old pictures and it is realy hard work to find out what is where and what is what.
Because I do not have a single view from above, the decks layout and other detaills may not be correct. So the ship is half historic and half speculative.

A close up? ... Ok. I will make one if I have added some more details next days.

Greetings!

Hi all...

some new images for you.

I have made new rescue-boats.
The boats cranes are more detailed now and I have changed the backpart a little bit.
The outboard stairs are also new.

after checking some photograps I also had to correct the middle gun positions and made their bases smaller.

I also finished the secondary weapons now. So I can show you a picture of all the ships guns now.

These are:
- 6 inch maingun
- 6 pounder
- 3 pounder
- 1 pounder Hotchkiss revolving gun

I have also a new overview-image for you.

What has changed since last image?

- I have added an anchor with chain.

- I have put some smaller details on the decks

- I added the secondary guns (I know they are to much at this rendering, I will change this next)

- I opened some of the rectangular window-protections at the ships side.

- again I changed the decks layout after having a closer look at some old pictures

- I started to make doors and windows into the bridge building ... more next.

Looking good! I can't believe they designed it to keep the steering controls where you can't even see where you are going.
