Hi, for that kind of work I will suggest buffing up the memory. Now its a question to how much can you motherboard take (it is supposed to be 4 or 8GB). I myself have AMD quad core @ 2.6GHz per core and 8GB of ram and I am working with images like 32000x32000 with some problems but my computer can manage to work fairly smooth. I can work even with 64000x64000. That is when he slows down. In photoshop I can work on just few layers in that resolution.

So my general advice to you is: Look in manual of your motherboard how much memory does it supports, and buy maximum memory, like me. :D

In longer term, my advice for your future work is to get AMD PC with 8 or 16GB of ram (doesn't need to be all filled in) and get at least dual core processor on 2.4GHz or higher. And also buy a graphic card (if you don't have one) with at least 512MB of ram @ 500MHz or with higher ram.

In a term of investment plan for all this I can tell you that its not high. Its something like ranging form 200-800euro (or 300-1000$). If you buy better equipment its gonna be greatly faster, and it will be more expensive, but this is a mid range configuration.

I hope I helped you on subject ;)
Cheers
