Traditional animators use a technique called "Onion Skinning" to trace images frame by frame. When dealing with large paint and Roto jobs, you may want to work on top of the previous frame for accurate measures. Here is the simple set up a typcial fusion onion skinning situation. (Also good for film scratching style effects)
