Problems with Colour!

hi, i am a student who is studying Maya. i am trying to create a VW camper van for my assignment. however i have come across a problem.

everything was going fine, i had created half of the camper, hoping to mirror it on the other side to create the whole thing. it had been coloured (in the usual way the camper vans are - blue on the bottom white on the top!) but randomly, when i click off of the object my whole car turns white. when i select the object it comes back with its correct colours, all in their correct places. when i go to render current frame it renders it as white. it is not supposed to be white!

has anybody else had this problem? or do you have any suggestions as to how i can rectify this problem?
