Beginner needs help

Hi Guys and thanks in advance.

I am hoping to do an Escape course very soon and need to learn the basics of Maya before i start. I have bought a copy of "Learning Autodesk Maya 2009" and have downloaded the trial version of Maya.
Im already struggling! im on page 32, and i dont know how to re-name the cube? im sure its the easiest thing to do but i cant get it. Also, where do i find the Channel Box? i need to set the divisions to 5!

If i take the book out of the equation, what im asking is,
How do i rename a cube? and how do i access the channel box?
