Good tut but I have a problem with the atmosphere... when making the reflection of the atmoshere i cant make the right side dark. It's still blue. I have downloaded the .max file and made everthing the same. Did I overseen something? or is there something else. I'm using 3ds max 8

Edit; Im also having trouble finding what kind of bitmaps I must import at the surface material. This guy is use so many diffenrent bitmaps that I get confussed.

Hope someone can help me

Thank you in advance!

The outcome of your technique is simply beautiful

But the tutorial isnt well explained. I have been trying to do it with all kinds of images for the past week.

For example, what image do you use for Self Illumination? In your planets, the dark side has patterns, like cities.

im pretty sure that this can't be done with any random image.

Also the surface looks rugged (at least for me) depending on what maps i use

and the clouds dont come out right. im still unsure if any image will get the job done.

this is what i got. as you can see, nowhere near as good as your planets.

anyways, thanks for the tut, at least someone is trying to teach how to make a planet. this is the only tutorial with a good outcome if done right.

In order to obtain the illumination of the dark side of planet you will look tuning the modifier - fallout, which is located in the roll - selfillumination.

Convoluted instructions

While I appreciate your generosity in providing this tutorial, it seems almost a wasted effort if you deliberately skip steps and expect the viewer to automatically understand what to do in absence of the necessary instruction.
For example...please explain how we are supposed to understand WHAT maps you are placing and WHY you are placing them within the Mix Map (that's within the Composite map, that's within the fallof map, that's within the diffuse map). You briefly state what the MixMap does...then just skip straight to the specular map.
If you provided the bitmaps within the same zip folder, some of us may have been able to reverse engineer what you did...but I haven't the slightest clue what bitmaps were placed in your MixMap...nor why they needed to be a mixmap in the first place, instead of a single bitmap for example. I wish you knew how frustrating it is to rely on a tutorial to help you create a shot...only to find out that it's missing pieces here and there and ultimately doesn't help you at all.

Nice artwork and technique, but sorry to say that it's poor execution on the tutorial itself.
