Smoothing groups tutorials?

I recently discovered how important and useful smoothing groups are. I knew that they exist but i have always used turbo/mesh smooth and didn't pay attention to them.
I read in max help about them but really couldn't get it i searched google but the same result.

So can you point me to a good tutorial about smoothing groups that doesn't just say what they are but how are they used, when are they used and why and not only for max but in general.

I searched google and I couldn't find, I'm just asking if you know a good tutorial I don't want you to for me, or you could share how you learned them.
Thanks.

It's really simple. there is almost nothing to explain. Try it and you will see what it does.
In max help type in smoothing groups and it will find you some good stuff

basicleh :P

each smoothing number represents a smoothed face if the numbers and faces are next to each other they smooth the two faces.

for instance in this image the one on the right has the number one assigned to all the faces so it attempts to smooth all the faces as if they where one.

the left one has separate numbers for separate faces so it smooths each face seperatly

Hope this helps
