Question about mesh editing...

im still quite a nooby to 3ds max but i love to model sci fi stuff so im testing my skills by modeling a big battleship type spaceship. i drew blueprints of my design i wanted to create, and ive been using the box modeling method so far to model it... well, i was wondering, is there a way to make the polygons of the model be "split" to make more polygons other than mesh smooth? i mean, ive got this area of my ship where i want to add more detail because it looks sorta dull..., and there are 16 large polygons there... is there a way that i can split the polygons so that each of the large 16 polygons would be made into 4 smaller ones? so that i would have 64 polygons in that area rather than 16. like i said im still pretty new to 3ds max so there may be a modifyer right under my nose that i don't even know about :p.

please let me know if u can, thx!

Someone please correct me if I'm wrong, don't want to give out bad info, but I think if you use tessellate it will do what you're asking.

thx, but now ive run into another problem, lol

ok there are parts of the hull that i want to kinda carv a little line into if you know wut i mean... so i found this car modeling tutorial that was using the same method to carv the lines around the windows and doors... and it said to select the edges and chamfer them 2 times, which i did, but the effect i got was nothing close to what it showed in the tutorial. in the tutorial it created new faces so that the middle one could be extruded inward to create the carv around the doors and windows, but on my model when i applied chamfer i got a jumbled mess of new edges but they all touched at a point at in the center of the edge i was trying to work with and kinda made an "X" shape which made a very awkward look on the model, so i hit undo and just thought id ask u guys.

ive never used the chamfer tool before so i don't even know if ive done anything wrong or if its suppost to do that, i just wanted to see if anybody knew wut i might be able to do?

by the way, this is the tutorial i was looking at, the chamfer section is near the bottom of the page... http://www.3dluvr.com/grid/tut3D/tut3d.htm
