*Noob Question* [3dsmax] Issues with Lathe.

Hey everyone, I'm pretty new to max and I'm having an issue with the lathe tool in 3dsmax 2009. I'm creating a popcan via the tutorial in the beginner section. Now, I draw my spline outline fine and I understand how it works (I've used this before). However this time around once I lathe the object, max creates a different top and bottom. Instead of using the spline for the top and bottom it creates what seems to be an additional top and bottom that is always as wide as the largest part of the line I drew. In this case, the bottom of the can isn't as wide as the body of the can, however once I lathe it, max creates a second bottom that is as wide as the body of the can. If I delete this base I can see through the object as illustrated in the attached picture.

Since I ran out of undo levels, the red line is essentially the spline I drew to lathe. In the section labelled with a "2" you can see lathed object, however the red line points to the strange bottom generated by max which is as wide as the popcan's body. But notice that base isn't part of the spline I drew, there is one on the top as well but it is less noticeable.

Selecting the vertices of the second tops and bottoms and deleting them doesn't leave me with the top or bottom I drew in my spline, it just removes the tops and bottoms.

I tried tinkering with the lathe object to no avail, how come when drawing flat tops and bottoms max changes them? How can I fix this?

a easy way is to add a edit poly modifyer and just delete the polygons you dont want. and then just use the cap buttonm to close the hole you created after deleting.

why you gett the bad topp and bottom is becaus under lathe modifyer you have a aligne buttons. "MIN" "CENTER" "MAX" you den need to use MIN or MAX and then scale the object down to the right size. "you might alsow want to use the flip normals check box futer up under lathe modifyer.

dont know if this made any sense but try ^^

Thanks for the response, I'll definitely give it another attempt tonight.
