Need help understanding how to Unwrap UV's

Hello.. Texturing has always been my downside when it comes to 3d modeling so i am trying to practice as much as i can but i cant seem to get around some area's, For instance how do you know when to use "planar" or "box" or "pelt" etc..

Also after you are done with modeling do you apply textures after or before you Unwrap?

It would be pretty cool if someone could shed some light on this. Thanks

I always unwrap before I apply textures.

As for what method to use. I play around with them to see which one looks best. usually i use the simplest one first. but if it does not allow me to map as well as i would like i move on. sometimes i seperat my object and unwrap several parts in different ways to get the best results.

it does take more time but it is quality over quanity for me.
