Material Advice

Hi there guys, first post for me though been lurking for quite some time.

Basically I am very new to 3d Max and so far I have really been concentrating on modelling and other than the generic materials I haven’t really looked into this area much at all.

My main issue atm is I am producing materials like matt painted walls, gloss painted skirting and glazing but they are never perfect and they are different values each time I model. Now I don’t know if such a thing exists but is there ‘recipes’ if you like for standard materials such as those mentioned, so somewhere that tells me:

Gloss Paint
Reflectance = x
Specularity = x
Etc

Or am I off on a tangent and you guys simply know materials well enough to just make them on the spot there and then?

As I say the reason I am asking is my materials are somewhat lacking and looking for guidance really.
