I need a little help with hair

Ok this is the thing, I am trying to get some hair on a character and no matter what i do i can't get it right. I have tried several tutorials and they don't help much. What is happening is that the hair goes through the mesh and if i do it with splines the same thing happens. I have been adjusting the setting in every way that i can but when they don't go through the mesh they go too far from the mesh. Can anyone give me any suggestions? The tutorials looks very easy but they do not state any problems that may occur. Thanks in advance for any help.

Hi.
Make a selection of the mesh on your character, where u want the hairs to grow, and clone it and make it non renderable. Than apply the hair modifier it, and select your original model as a collision model, and hair will not go through it.
Hope this might solve your problem.

This really helped a lot. I tried a lot of the options, and getting this hair right is not an easy task.
