Editing vertices whilst keeping symmetry mod on?

Hi everyone, sorry if this is a silly question, but i cant find an answer on google and ive been fiddling for quite awhile!

Basically ive been modelling a bugatti veyron and the body is all done. I applied the symettry mod but there was still a gap so i increased the threshold value. This has sorted out the gap for the whole car except the hood where there is an extrusion that it dosent like. I cant increase the threshold anymore as it distorts other places of the car.

So i thought that I would delete/weld the vertices that are causing the hole but I cant edit the vertices for both sides because whenever I go into sub-object selection the modifier is turned off and I only have half a car. I can get vertices up with symmetry on but I cant edit them.

So how do I keep the symmetry on whilst editing the vertices? Thanks!

Here is a screenshot where you can see the hole on the hood of the car.

Edit vertices normally, when u go in to edit geometry it only shows the geometry not modifiers so adjust it and all modifier will accept changes in the geometry and u can also select the show end result by clicking end result button, which is the second button below the modifier stack .

Hope it helps.
