Question Character Cloth Simulation in 3ds max 2008

Whas Crakalakin!!!

I am having serious problems with simulating cloth for an animated character...the Character, a leopard, is 109cm tall and the shirt/cloth is to be about 50cm. If I use the cloth modifier the cloth intersects the character mesh. I have tried changing the units and adjusting lost of this parameters but nothing seems to work. Please help me with a way or a couple of ways to do this????
