Cannot get Edit Poly's to work correctly.

I am following one of the simple video tutorials that come with 3D Studio Max 2009. Specifically, the video that shows how to modify an object.

The problem I am running into is that I cannot drag the vertices around as shown in the video. I am able to create the cube, add more segments, add the "Edit Poly" modifier, choose the "Vertice Selector", and select some Vertices. However when I run my cursor over the Vertices (and red axis that represent them), I remain in select mode. In the side bar it constantly reports "<No Current Operation>". I can't figure out what I am missing here.

However I was able to use an option like "Extrude" in the "Edit Vertices" area in the side bar successfully.

I figure I must be missing something very simple and obvious but I can't figure it out. I've watched the tutorial video several times but I don't know what I missed.

Thanks ahead for any help.

You must activate the select & move tool located in the tool bar. If you mouse-over the buttons for a couple seconds it will tell you the name of the tool. You can also use the keyboard shortcut which is the W key.
