Biped Axis of Revolution

hey guys. ok, that alien character im working on, im ready to animate him, but there is a problem that doesnt let me continue.

i have finished physiquing him with a character studio biped. but i have a problem:

when i try to rotate his foot or leg or spine on the x-axis, it rotates on the y-axis, and vice versa. the z-axis seems normal. the only way i can temporarily fix this is if i go into figure mode and back out again, but that rotates the whole biped into a wierd angle, and then when i open the file again, the same problem comes back..

do you guys know what causes this? thanks.
