Question adding a face border

I'm using 3ds max 8

I need to make a 3d letter, so that it displays an outline as if it was ink drawn and i need it's face to still display the ink outline but to also have a main red colour at the centre but with a white thick border.

I know that to draw the ink-like outline I must select an [ink'n'paint] material. That solves my first problem.

I also know that to assign a different material to the same object I need to select the desired face and drag and drop the new material on it. That solves problem two.

What I can't solve is problem three. How do I make a face display an outline and a border? like in the image below. Do I need to make a map? but then how can I make so the program creates the map automatically so that the white layer is at every border?

I'm not sure how to do it using only Ink'n'Paint but you might simply break the polygons of the letters so that you have areas that define the white borders. Then you can select the border polygons and apply a white material to them and a red Ink'n'Paint material to the rest of the polygons.

I have finally found a solution: you simply selectthe top face of the poly and request the "insert" function so that the borders are inserted by a specified amount. Changing the Material Id for each part of the poly you can assign the colours
