Is there a way we can convert the 3dsmax 5 files in order to be able to open them in 4 version?
(something else than export them as 3ds files or stl)

Not that I know of... the only way is to convert them (export them) to versionless formats, such as 3ds, dxf, etc... You could try opening max 4 and max 5 at the same time (if you have them both) and copying the elemnts fron one to the other, but I haven't actually tried it, so I don't even know if it's possible.

I had the same problem.. Just get max 5..

A previous version cant open a new version because it doesnt support the new version. but you might be able to merge a file (which is basicly the same as opening it.) open max4 and then file>merge and try the max5 scene you want. might work i dont know.

I ve tried to merge the file as Sir_Vulcan said but it still doesnt work :(

I think it need some plug in but not sure n it isnt the most effective way to do
