Games - Programming...etc?

I'm fairly new to 3d modelling and i've recently gotten interested in how games are made. I know its possible for someone to make all the elements of a video game, but i also know there has to be a lot of programming that goes into it. I have no idea what kind of programming knowledge is needed. I have no idea what software should be used. Does anyone have any links and/or tips on where to start? Chances are, i will not be able to easily learn how to make a game, but i'm curious anyway.

For sure... I'll let you know if i find anything. Are you trying to find out how to make your own games or are you just curious like me? I think that if i found someone who knows how to program games and what not, i could probably make a lot of the models for the game....well, once i get better at making models, you know.

To learn Game programming....you need to learn C++ first!
Visit this site for tutorials on C++:-

Good Luck! :type:

I'm not much of a game programmer, but I know this much.
You have to learn a programming language, but it can be other than C++.
Generaly, almost any language can be used to make a game, but I guess you're thinking of 3D games, and all the fancy stuff.
Many will say that C++ is a good choice, but you can also use C#, Visual Basic, or some other language. If you're going to make a DirectX game - you'll need the DirectX SDK. There are also graphics APIs other than DirectX, like is OpenGL.
But making a game is much more than programming graphics - there's also designing, modeling, animating characters, adding audio f/x and music, UI, AI...
Don't be discouraged, though.
If you have no programming expirience, it's ok, you'll learn along the way. Find some books specialised on game programming (note: this is a general topic, so the book may have nothing to do with 3D), and 3D graphics in general, as well as 3D graphics APIs (note: theese books cower 3D).
I read somwhere that every game programmer should start with a Tetris game :). To code it, you can use any windows programming language (VB, C++, C#), with no aditional graphics APIs required - use the integrated one - Win GDI/GDI+. I once made a Tetris game in MS Quick Basic (a MS DOS programming language once used to teach begginers). Funny what one can choose to do when bored...

[Philosopher] you are right, but you've written lesson. Don't get me wrong, but [xhurleyx] needs some tutorials.
I guess that things like TrueVision3d ( www.truevision3d.com ) or I suppose much better Ogre3d (www.ogre3d.org ) will be much more suitable for his knowledge. They are just better for beginning.
I made a few games for different platform like Java ( I mean java for cell phone) and also for GameBoyAdvance.
For Pc platform I used TrueVision3d ( it was 2 years ago ), but now, friends and I are going to do 3d game in Ogre3d.

[xhurleyx] - You can visit above links, and also see my previous games ( http://venus.wsb-nlu.edu.pl/~ppietrzak ).
Sorry for the language but I didn't manage to be on time with translation.
I'm native Polish, but I think you will manage to download - it's easy.
Some of them were written in Visual Basic, another in ANSI C, another in Java and others were made in C++ (I did'n put sources - If you want you can ask me by mail - You will find it on my website) :)

I'm currently using multiverse to develop my game. I will reply later with links to sites that are great for developing 2D RPG games (which is quite difficult) Once you master that, then you can move into 3D gaming.
