I think the Brazil full version is 1200 dollars and if you have one and you buy the second one then is 750 dollars.

I used the MAX Scanline renderer for years now and it was not great but "ok".
With my old Max 3.1 I also tried VRayFree and it was nice (but limited because it was the Free version).
When I got my Max 6 I tried MentalRay and was really confused and nothing looked how I wanted it.
But after a few days trying arround I start to like it :)

V-ray looks fast and ... as these days everyone says. Render man looks something a bit different to me, but not that much userfriendly.
i used final render stage-0 too, and really its awesome so just think how the stage-1 could be, but i dont see that much work with it i dont know why, maby it has a problem.
mentalray is great either, im getting more familiar with it as much as im using it, nowadays almost im doing everything with mentalray.
and overall not even using these renderers gives better results that even in much cases they are so much(really) faster than default renderer. but default renderer is faster in some particular cases.

Some nice to me:

Brazil - It's awesome for it's effects and it's artistic touch
True Space - Nice for that video game render style

its depend on the artist. Ive been using mental ray, vray and final render for quite sometim. . above all three, final render is the best for professional artist because its give you full control of every setting. so u can get whatever result that u want, either realistic, cinematic or cartoonish look. the final toon materials is really good for cartoonish rendering.
vray is very fast and have lots of online material library because of it massive userbase.
mental ray is getting better now with lots of preset materials inside max.

cant believe this is what i asked in 2003 ~

Renderer have evolved nowadays..it does help arhictectural, animation & cg artists. each renderer have their own strength...depends on the artist to choose which one preffered.
above all..we love our renderer! thanks guys
