OK
1. go to UserCP (which should be right above this window kind of to the left next to blog, FAQ, Member List, Calender, etc...)
2. Go to edit avatar
3. at the bottom choose custom avatar or use one thats already there
4. if you use a custom one you can either give a direct link or upload it from you computer and it has to be 150x150 pixels
5. hit save changes

and your all done, I hope this helps

for the lost world competition thing you can go to the Challenges Link at the top right side of the site then scroll down to the lost world challenge and click on it, or heres a link to it Welcome to 3DM3.com - World's Computer Graphics Community

as for the portfolio thing idk I know you can go to portfolio at the top of the page and search for a specific person or just browse but the portfolio button on my little profile thing doesn't work if that what you mean you might want to ask that in the tech support/suggestion forum.
