Rendering image backgrounds

Hi regarding animated 3d films, do the studios use matte painted backgrounds instead of modelled/textured backgrounds because this will save rendering time?

How much longer on average does it take to render animation with a matte painted background than one which has a fully modelled/textured and lighted background?

Just make a new layer and move it to the bottom, then paste the background image you want onto it.
