Nurbs to Polygon

Hello all. I have a question about a tutorial on here. I have been looking at Sasan Raifee's tuturial Nurbs/Polygons Head Modeling for use with Maya. I have never tried modeling a head in this way. It seems he draws the curves and then creates nurbs patches from these curves. He then converts these patches and polygons and merges the vertices. My question is, do you need to add more splits and loops after merging the vertices for the eyes and mouth or will you have already have enough splits and loops to create everything? Any help would be greatly appreciated.
