New 3DS user

Hello everyone,

I've taken it upon myself to embrace and learn how to model assets using 3DS to diversify my skill-sets as a programmer which is my real trade. I'm currently learning how to use 3DS 2010 and model and texture game-ready assets, eventually animations and rigging.

First I want to thank this site and it's users for posting such awesome and diverse tutorials! It's really helped me get on my feet and grasp some of the basics. I'm able to competently create UVMapped cubes and even more complicated shapes

I guess my question at this point, is where is the best location on the forums to post simple questions or seek advice?

For example... If I have a plane (a square) as a editable poly, and want to cut it in half diagonally perfectly, how can I do that? The perfectly is the key part here. When I delete 1 of the four vertices, the whole face disappears. If I take one of the four vertices and move it between the two corners, I get a good approximation, but it is ever so slightly off. I just want to learn the best technique for doing this!

Thanks all.

First of all, let me welcome you to our site. I hope you will find answers for all your questions here.

You can generally post every question for it's self, or you can start a thread in witch you can ask us various number questions and we will try to help you.

P.S. BTW, most of us know much more then 3D modeling. We also do art, textures, animation, etc... Even some programing with openGL. Well... that is what I do also :)

So again, welcome and have a pleasant stay here in our community.
Cheers

first picture is how you cut a polygon, second 's how you remove a vertex

That is good, but the polygon is actually made of n-faces so this for instance poly has 5 edges. 4 on the side and one i diagonal. If you want to slice it on half, do it the easy way. First make it a editable mesh/poly and select the diagonal edge and make it visible, on the end of the list. You wont need to remove any vertex. But... if you need to cut it on the other diagonal, it will not leave any vertexes except the one in the middle, and this time the poly will have 4 faces or 8 edges (6 visible and 2 not) with 5 vertexes.

This tool is mostly good if you have an object that is already done and you want to cut across few polygons.

Cheers ;)
