Need help i am really really confused about modeling in maya

Hi guys, i made a car using two curves for different parts and lofting it to make a surface, i combined those surfaces and merged vertices.. And while i came to know from different internet sources, lofted surfaces are non coplanar surfaces, and also my model i cudnot change it to subD and while using car paint rendering was corroded..(sorry for lengthy explanations) Now i'm in confusion like 'are lofted surface not a valid modeling approach or are they 3D surfaces?' While doing cleanup selecting match polygons and checking non planar faces it highlights 99percent with red faces... Really frustrated with this.. Is there any valid spline modeling in maya?
Ahh.. Thank yu for patience in reading this but i nid help guys.. Help me out!
