Color perspectives

hello guys,
Recently I have been trying to get in digital painting.I was able to Grasp most of the concept.Except ,about the Color perspective.I wish to know about the Lighting techniques that digital artist use to make the image look realistic and good.. Like how a near and far object is been differenciated.
Could you Please give me some idea,or even if you are able to suggest me some books or any recently released tutorial, that would be of big help. But,please,I mostly need an idea from you people.
Thank you.

From now What I have understood is that. Depth axis controls Saturation ,Vertical axis controls brightness,And Horizontal axis controls Camera Angle.. Is it right?
