Rep Power: 0 ![]() | Attaching Mesh needed? Hi Guys! I'm modeling a sword for a mod (my first serious model) And I got 2 Parts now...the handle and the blade... I smoothed the Blade via NURMS And the Handle I left in low poly without any smoothing (looks better) now my question is - can I export the model with 2 seperate objects? or do I have to collapse it to 1 Object by attaching both items? attaching them would apply NURMS to the hole mesh, which I want to avoid. thx for help ! Rep Power: 6 ![]() | depends on what you are exporting to. if your exporting to a game you better get it to 1 model. the way to do that is gett the NURMS on the part you want then colaps that model. after that you just attach or colaps the two models togheter. then export.

Rep Power: 0 ![]() | I know what you mean - but NURMS in 3ds MAX 2009 - isn't addable to the modifier list...its in the rollout "Subidivision Surface" and cause of that I can't collapse the mesh so the NURMS isn't affected to the other Part of the mesh after attaching it :( |

Rep Power: 0 ![]() | disable all NURMS subdive, poly-attach your different objects then select polys of the blade. In the Subdivision Surface rollout, enable the option : separate by-> smoothing group. Your blade polys are always selected, affect a smooth group to them, then enable the NURMS subdivision. Your blade is smoothed, your handle not.

Rep Power: 0 ![]() | Hmm weird... I put my blade in SmGrp 1 the middle thing into SmGrp 2 And the handle, which I don't want to be affected by any smoothing, intp SmGrp 3 I activated Seperate by [Smoothing Groups] But again the whole thing is affected by NURMS - Also I don't want to affect the handle with ANY smoothing - and Smoothing Group 3 will affect smoothing - that can't be the solution ? |

Rep Power: 0 ![]() | what you exactly mean with "clear all" ? I already tried not affect a smooth group to the handle - but as the meshes are attached to one object the NURMS affect everything - not just the smoothing grouped elements :( |

Rep Power: 0 ![]() | select all your polys and in the smooth group select clear all. all polys always selected, click on autosmooth and let the value to 45. all the polys are now affect on the 1-2-3 groups. select your polys for the blades, affect the group 4. Enable separate by group, and enable the nurms subdiv. It work here.

Rep Power: 0 ![]() | In fact, i don't know why you want to attach all objects in viewing your video. Don't attach them, then apply Nurms subdiv to object or not, and group all. This is the better way i think with your all parts, i didn't think you've got so many. Plus, this will be easiest for texturing and uvwmap. :) If problem is on exporting for modify in external program, Zbrush and mudbox did recognize the group objects, so no problem for you i guess. must check.

Rep Power: 0 ![]() | Alright - grouping has the same effect like collapsing the Object - the smoothing applied turns into a greater number of polygons after grouped (or collapsing) I want to keep the polygons as low as I can... But I know how to do it now ! Thanks a lot |
