3ds max or blender?

I need to decide between the two, and i have a few questions...
Which is better? What are the pros/cons of each? Which one would you recommend, and for what purposes?

Thanks,

first it depends on your budget, if you do not a lot of money then go blender, if you have a bit of cash then get Max.

You have to remember Blender is freeware so its not ultra good, but for its price it is great.
Max is your medium - professional software with all the good stuff and advanced features that Blender doesnt offer.
What Amek says is good, however I started off with Max myself and didnt find it too hard to learn
