(3Dmax) plz help: How do i implement a shape in a layer.

hey guys
I am 100 % new to this forum so hi :)
I will be on this forum for a long time i hope :)
I looked around and all the good work really inspired me to get better at 3D
software i use is 3D Studio Max and i am a beginner.


so now for what i came to ask :)

I want to make sort of this effect.
you need to look kind of good to see what i mean.

Watch from 2:33 to 2:44....
its about the black sort of cubes on the top and the bottom

I asked him with a pm if he used a lot of objects to make the black cubes and he answered me this:

"its one layer implemented with one shape. then I set the variation to 100%"


I asked if he could explain more in detail but he did not respond.
so can you guys maybe explain me in detail how to implement a shape in a layer ?

or how to do this even easier
if there are tutorials about this i would lovee to watch them :)

Well, as I can see there is a bunch of chamfer boxes in the scene, up and down. It appears that they are in a circle and the camera is in the center of the circle so all boxes are on the maximum distance of half of diameter. But they may not be chamfer boxes (from the second watch). But from second watch I can tell that it might be angle change of the camera, when camera "moves" in to the boxes...

So... All boxes are black and as I can see there is a gap between each of them, so you get the effect of background breaching.

P.S. I saw that an angle of the camera is changed, now I don't know is it more than normal or less. My guess, it is less because the view is more narrow.

Overall, that is the everything you have there.

the guy could be using particle flow , or even scatter. with these 2 tools you can distribute an object on another surface. try max help to get a clear view. here is a result of what you may get with scatter.

the particle flow or scatter thing sounds and looks good,
i am going to look it up tomorrow ( when i can find it ^^ )

hmm i can not find the particel flow and scatter in my modifyer pannel.
is this something you need to download ?

ow and i tried to make all the cubes with hand just make a row 30 of them with different heights and copied them and made it 30 by 30 so there are like 900 cubes and then i made the top also 900 so 1800 objects ^^
my computer started running slow and stuff
is this cause there are just to many object?

i really need to get better with max :)

ow if someone would be so friendly to give me a project file where it is all in it would be awesome.
then i could look around how you did it my self.


i know i am asking a lot :O

No, actually you have it under Create > Compounds > Scatter in the first row commands.

P.S. Try not to overload your computer, you cant work smoothly unless you hide objects, and to do so, select an object(s) right click on them and Hide selection. You can also freeze the selection but it will still render while you work, so my advice is to use the hide function. It really eases your work.

Try these things and tell me if you managed to do the scatter, if not I will send you a file with a surface, an object and a scattered surface with n-objects randomly placed.

You should be, Max is made to easy make anything you want :)

P.S. Keep this hiding in mind when you do this because max or/and your computer can freeze just because you don't have enough ram.
