Perforated Plate, how can I create one?

Hi!
I'm a newbie em 3DS modelling, more like a hobby for me.
I'd like to know a easy way to create a perforated plate, like the ones found on the exhaust of trucks, machine gun barrels and so on.
Is there a way of doing these only by materials, like a mask map that simulates the emptyness on the holes????
The effect is something like these:

Thanks.

If you're using 3dsmax you could do this by creating the outer shape (a rectangle, circle, whatever) then create another one for the inside and copy it lots of times, then attach everything together and use extrude modifier. Of course, you could also use opacity mapping.
