modeling joints

I am moving on from none deforming objects and moving onto human modeling, which is turning out to be rather hard for myself. My biggest question is how to model the areas of the body that has joints. (Knees, elbows, wrist, and so on) Should the vortexes be closer together on the front of the knee and further away from each other on the back of the knee?

where the areas of the body that has joints front side should expand and back side should be closer because the front side of joint expand at the time of animation. So front side is expand and back side should be closed.
