cleaning up an autocad drawing in max

i have drawn a light in autocad and inported it into 3d max. there are a lot of extra lines that i would like to clean up, but when i do, i start to delete the surface. the drawing 'top2' shows what i mean. i have tried to convert it to an editable mesh, but i must be doing something wrong. any suggestions for a newbee?
many thanks

well..to clean up this edges that i can think of is by using Maya...because in Maya u can delete unwanted edges/poly/surface...easy and fast.

*3ds max..im not sure.u can delete some poly but i think maya is much better in modelling tools.
