Lamborghini Murcielago-Help Please !!!

Hi everybody.
I'm an noob. to this forum and to 3ds max in general so please keep up with me.
I've been learning how to model a Murcielago and I've ran into a few problems.
After I did exactly as the tutorial said and put all the required vertexes over the blueprints, it said that I should insert a surface modifier with patch topology of 0 and a threshold of 0.58. when I inserted the modifier, the shape wouldn't build up unless a threshold of 3.5 was applied. I decided to skate over this part and continued. Then it said that I had to turn the line ( with the surface modifier) into and editable poly, when I did that it had the same result as mesh smooth, it increased the number of vertexes incredibly, while in the tutorial pictures it didn't change anything except the options ( vertex,face,....). I -once again- decided to ignore this part and continued.
The next part was to apply a symmetry modifier on the z axis ( I'm modeling the left side of the car), when the tutorial did it the body was completed, but when I did it, it appeared on the other side making both doors facing each other in the middle and to gaps on the right and left.
After you have read my incredibly long post, I would like you to help me, since I really am stuck
Thanks.

I'm not sure about your vertex modeling, the surface modifier, or why edit poly messed your count up.

However, to fix the symmetry modifier, open up its sub-object selection in the modifier panel, select "mirror" (its the only option), and use the transform tool to move the mirror gizmo until you line the center of the car up. Use " weld seam and adjust the threshold in order to weld the two halves of your car together.
