Rep Power: 0 ![]() | Car modelling I have started to model my first car. I have done the wheels ok, which I have attached (any comments welcome), but I just have a question on modelling the body. Every car has panels, which are 'separated', for example the bonnet to the front wings and grille. Tutorials explain how to make up each panel using weld, meshsmooth etc, but not how they go together. I know it is probably a simple question, but do you draw each body part and just leave a small gap between them to indicate separate panels? Your help is appreciated. Thanks in advance |

| Lightwave Enthusiast | What software are you using? I am a Lightwave 3D user myself, and what I tend to do is model each part in layers. In LW's Modeler you can work on a seperate layer while you view all of them. I highlight all the polygons on the edges and shrink them just enough that there are no visible gaps, but you can clearly see the definition of the panels. After that, I import all the layers together for my completed object. If you want to see an example of one of my cars (*my best one, actually!) you can view it here: http://www.3d02.com/gallery_still_image.asp?id=218 |

Rep Power: 0 ![]() | I am using max 5 and trying to learn it at the same time. Got books and printed off tutorials from the net, but still finding it hard going. I have chosen my car to model as I have a real life reference to look at. I was thinking that I should model each body part separately, but I can't see that working if I model the car using slpines, then add a surface to it, unless I am missing something? Cheers for replying though and I will check out your car. |

| Lightwave Enthusiast | I don't know much about Max, but honestly that's the way I would do it in lightwave only because modeling with splines allows you to create a smoother finish without an extensive amount of polygons. Unfortunately, I learned that atfer I modeled this car, and I wasn't about to start all over. I did some checking for you and found what seems to be a good tutorial- it's got a lot in it like modeling the car the way you're doing it (spline modeling) and polygonal modeling. Here's the link to it and I hope it helps you out. http://www.raz.ro/tutorials/masina/car1.htm |
