I think a grey render as a plate is too hard for beginners or new guys on mattepainting.

I would suggest a random image of a train station with or without people. Then the artist can change it to his liking. make it look desolated, destroyed etc etc. That way we can work much easier...

That's a nice idea. It's important though that a professional skill can really shine, and a beginner can also do a fine job. Maybe a reward/prize system that emphasises that with two categories or something like that.

Working of a single image is a fine idea and we should roll with that :)
