I like your illustration a lot. I would imagine it's tough if you're drawing directly into Photoshop..? Did you use a Wacom tablet or similar?

For illustrations in Photoshop, I would normally sketch & scan in, then create paths (to create selection marquees). I would then use the airbrush within the selection marquees - and build up with layers like that. To get the definition on strong lines that I want to look like pencil, I would then draw a path where I want my line, and stroke with the brush (with a chalk nib) at about 3 pixels.
