I pretty much did this:

1. Helix spline <<< Perfectness
2. Extrude Edges
3. Weld Edges
4. FFD Box - Shaping
5. Edit Poly - (half sphere to cap top)
- mouth of shell extrusion
- loads more tweeking
6. FFD shaping again
7. Shell
8. Meshsmooth

Im no genius :P

spiral

I am not a maya user however im sure running a script like: Spiral

May help you create a helical spline.

If not could you not use a cylinder and then simply move each edge / verticies upwards or downwards by a set amount of each edge around the parameter. Then copy and weld?

might be easier to use a spline, move the points into a spiral, and then use the rest of ur method. tons faster. im not sure ill have time to participate, but ill at least give the spiral a go. thanks alex
