Question : Glowing hot metal??

Im a First year studying Animation at DMU (leicester) been a long time viewer of articles on here and decided it was time to make myself known. So my first post is a question.

Im using Maya 2008 Unlimited and i want to get a "red" hot glowing Metal effect. Ive tried using simple shaders and not really getting the effect i want. Any suggestions or mini tutorials will be creatly appreciated !
