Are you modelling in NURBS or Polygons?

Smooth Nodes

Hey dude, Well I know that if u model with NURBS u get a rebuild surface option where u can set your U and V spans and all that stuff, so that means that in polygons u should have something similiar to that. U can try to unsmooth your work with either the Reduce option or the cleanup options in maya's polygons menu. Let me know if it helped u out.
