Maya - Polygon Holes?

Hi,

From the image you can see the hole I am trying to fill (actually, I have just realized this particular forum, for some reason, does not allow the posting of images - a decided drawback). Imagine a 6-sided hole. This a piece of the cranium of a head mesh originally constructed in Hash Animation Master. When imported into Maya, various artifacts of the Hash modeling paradigm ('hooks', 'five-sided patches', etc.) result in holes like this. I have tried the following:

Fill Hole Tool - I select the head mesh, select edges around the hole, select 'FILL HOLE', then I get a message saying - 'Result: polyCloseBorder3' - but I can see no result in the mesh. The hole remains.

Append to Polygon Tool - I select the head model and go to Polygons > Append to Polygon Tool and start clicking on the vertices that form the hole, then press Enter to finish drawing. I have even tried unchecking 'Ensure Planarity' within the options. Visually, an orange polygon begins to form, filling the hole as I click vertices. However, when I press 'Enter' to finish, nothing happens. The hole remains. When I click the first vertice as part of the process I get the message: - Warning: Bad topology : edit this object at your own risks. When I hit enter after completeing the vertice-clicking process I get the mesage: - 'Result: polyAppend1'. Yet, the hole remains.

Extrude Edge - Nothing.

I have even made a custom, multi-sided polygon as a separate piece of geometry, used the Split Polygon Tool to create the same number of polygons per edge that the hole has and tried to use Merge Edge to connect the patch to the edges of the hole. It almost works but I get spaghetti, criss-crossed joins. Maybe I am doing things wrong but so far I am unable to close this. I don't care what the closed hole looks like because I am in the process of redesigning this mesh. I just need to close it somehow so I can continue. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

~S.~

Heya Snark

Would you mind sending me the file so that I can take a look at it for you? That way I can see what is going on and then run you through the process.

Mills

Hi, Mills.

I have had some success over the past couple of days.

I've gotten 'Split Polygon', 'Merge Vertice' and 'Append to Polygon' to work for various operations but I have still not gotten 'Fill Hole' or 'Extrude Edge' to work. What mode do I need to be in for those? Deleting History made a difference. What is the difference between 'Delete by Type' and 'Delete All by Type' ?

Thanks!

~S.~

Heya :)

To be able to use fill hole and extrude edge, you need to be in component mode and you need to have edges selected. So...to do that you would right click and hold over your object until a menu appears. Once that menu appears select edge. Then you can select the edge you want to extrude...same goes for fill hole. You would select all your edges that you would want to be filled.

The difference between delete by type and delete all by type is......
Delete by type.....this is when you have an object or a few objects selected that you want history or anything else deleted.

Delete all by type.....this is when you don't need any objects selected, instead this will delete history or anything else that you want to all your objects in your scene.

Mills :)

Thanks, Mills!

I will work with this info for a couple days. If I still have trouble I'll post a file of the whole mesh.
