Maya, modelling a car, problem with converting to SubD

Hi,
I'm modelling a car. Now i have split the car into several parts, duplicated the surfaces and assigned them to layers. But after converting such parts to SubD , like e.g. the front bumper, maya converted each surface itself. After that my front bumper consisted of many rounded surfaces, having no contact to each other. Could anybody tell me where's the mistake. Thanks for any response!

I have the EXACT same problem!!

I've been driving myself INSANE the past couple of days trying to get this to work right but I just can't figure it out. Did you have any luck yet?

A picture of what it looks like before and after the Sub D conversion is attached to better describe the problem.

I am selecting the hood, then hitting Modify > Convert > Polygun to Subdiv

I made sure the hood polygons were combined... so I assumed Maya treated the hood as a single polygon then, but maybe not I don't know. Help us!
