How to model these shapes?

Hey guys, i'm a student starting my first year in 3D for maya, i'm getting used to the package and would like to learn how to copy these sort of shapes from the reference pictures below,

ImageShack - Hosting :: picyoxh0.png

I've tried using some of the curve function, but i don't fully understand it and find myself stuck when trying to merge points from different curves.

Any help, guidance would be highly appreciated.

You can create this shapes by 2 methods.
1. Boolean operations (differ.)
2. By curves. Create shape by curve than use LOFT and/or PLANAR. After that you can convert it to polygons.
