Question Help - Shadows not changing colour

I primarily use Max and don't tend to use Maya much but I am for a current university project and parts of Maya confuse me. I've got a very basic scene with some match-moved data with camera footage as a background. This footage has a desk in it which I am animating a hand walking along it, I have a modified box object to recreate a desk in the footage to allow the shadows of the hand to be cast onto it, however when I try to change the colour of the shadows nothing happens, the shadows appear grey/black. I've also discovered even when the light isn't in the scene the shadows are still present, why is this and how can I change the colour? I can provide the maya files if anyone wants to have a look at them, can't post images or links here though due to not having posted enough.

Thanks for any help anyone can provide.

Hi, thanks for your help, unfortunately the reason the shadows weren't changing colour was because I was using the UseBackground material which does not support coloured shadows, I had to render them as a separate pass and edit in After Effects. Also, the 'shadows' that were appearing even when no lights were in the scene were caused by final gather being enabled.
