Help needed: Baking textures in Maya

Hi I'm following a tutorial from the book, Mastering Maya 7, and in chapter 12 it explains how to bake a lighting setup onto a character. I've followed everything exactly like the book , I imported the light dome, selected the character, went to Hypershade, right clicked in the work area and chose > Graph > Graph materials on selected objects, which creates two nodes connected to the lambert node in the work area, InitialSahdingGroup and InitialParticleSE.

but when I get to the part 'Convert to file texture' I get an error message : "Cannot convert a texture connected to initialParticleSE"

In the book it says I should have a file texture linked to a surface shader that is applied automatically to my character.

Does anyone know what I am doing wrong? Please help, thanks.

I got help from somewhere else on this. Turns out I had to just create a new lambert material and repeat the process for it to work. Wierd.
