HI I am looking for a way to convert a 3ds file into a wavefront .obj

There must be some converters , try google.

I convert using wings 3d, it can import and export 3ds obj and i think even lwo, and also its a very nice little modeling tool.

I can import .3ds files into carrera and export as an .obj but the files can only be models they can not have anything else in them

If you want to import the material info with models,I think you could try .fbx. .obj only includes mesh data,but .fbx will cantain animation,lights,cameras.Im using maya,so donno much about Carrera.

I primarily use maya I only use carrera to to change a .3ds file into a .obj file thats all I use it for

I would have thought that since atuodesk has aquired maya they would put a import .3ds file option into maya 8 and vice versa

.3ds to .obj

Pipeline3D which you can find at Pipeline3D - 3D Visualization and Format Conversion for 3DS, LWO, OBJ, PDB, PLY will convert .3ds to .obj. It has other converters and is inexpensive. It also runs on Windows, Mac or Linux.
