export as an STL from solidworks go in to the options put the settings to fine.
import the stl in to max, mae sure u select quick weld and smoothing when the import options appear. if the smoothing doesn't wokr properly import the STL again but turn off smoothing, then apply a smooth modifer to the stl where u can adjust the values of the modifer.

u can try using IGES but it normal starts up when brough in t ax, like the surfaces are back to front...etc....i have heard SAT is a good file format to use but i think both SAT and IGES produce very large file sizes...so are to be avoided in max...realy if u can get away with it.
