I have been learning Maya for a Little while and they are essentialy the same. Powerful features, different menu but the same results, if you Learn Maya You will be able to pickup Max quickly and vice versa. Its realy not the software that matters, it is the artist, all you need is the basics and you can master any software. check out issue 95 of 3d world and you will see what I am talking about.
