The vehicle (M163 Vulcan) in the first image you speak of was made at least two years ago and is going to be remade. I asked Catia to remove that pic from his previous post, he wasn't aware that the M163 was going to be remade.

The flatness comes from the fact some of those pics are renders in max from a couple years ago and the artist may not have applied the normal or the shader used didn't have the nomals shown correctly. We'll put together some different pics to show everyone here.
